BBC Global News is looking for talented technical operators to work in its TV galleries and studios in W1, the new Broadcasting Centre for BBC News Division. You will be working initially in Peel Wing which houses Persian TV and Arabic Multimedia, and there will be opportunities to work within the wider W1 as News migrates. It is an exciting and challenging time for both of these high impact, multimedia channels, with recent historical news events and volatility in the Middle East. The Persian TV service is live 8 hours a day, Arabic TV is live 24 hours a day 7 days a week and we need talented, energetic individuals to join our multi-skilled teams to enable us to make the best TV possible. You will have one core skill of Vision Mixing, Floor Managing, Studio Cameras, Sound Mixing or Technical Management. You will also have a secondary skill from this group.
We’re looking for a number of Multi Skilled Technical Operators, to work in our galleries and studios in both Arabic and Persian, as well as any other emerging Global News TV. This will involve all technical areas of output. Broadly speaking, you’ll work in Gallery operations - lighting, vision and camera control, communications & circuit co-ordination, sound mixing, vision mixing (including some simple direction), transmission control, Studio Operations Camera operations and Floor managing. You’ll operate standard newsroom production system packages such as ingest, recording, desktop editing, templated graphics and media asset management. You’ll also be responsible for handling problems encountered with live transmissions and recordings, taking account of editorial priorities and availability of resources.
You’ll bring demonstrable experience of working in a live broadcast environment and you’ll show good familiarity with a range of technical systems, including news production systems. Naturally, you’ll be fully competent in at least one role in Studio/Gallery Operations and will be able to undertake tasks in at least one other technical area. The areas are Sound Mixer, Vision Mixer, Technical Co-ordinator (lighting, communications and camera control), Camera Operator and Floor Manager. You’ll also show a willingness to learn to operate new technology systems and to be able to adapt to different working methods. Part of the selection process for this role will include a gallery and studio based test in your primary area of skill.
