BBC Weather Centre, London
Two-year fixed-term, 24x7 shift working
The Met Office team at BBC TV Centre is an integral part of BBC Weather. We work with the BBC to provide a key area of communication on the weather to the UK public including the production of forecasts, editorial content and the delivery of weather forecasts and stories.
About the Met Office
Beyond weather. That’s the best way to describe our work at the Met Office. With over 1,800 people working at some 60 sites around the globe, we provide world-leading weather and climate services in the UK and overseas. Today, our products and services meet the needs of many different customers – from the general public, government and schools, through broadcasters and new media, to civil aviation and businesses in every sector imaginable. Everything we do, every area of our work, has a real impact on people’s lives.
About the role
While you’ll be employed by the Met Office, your professional home will be the BBC Weather Centre in London, delivering broadcasts on TV, radio and multimedia.
Engaging, informative and professional, you’ll work to the standards the BBC demands (including their style guides and editorial policy) while being consistent with the meteorological standards of the Met Office. You’ll bring the weather to life for your audience. Above and beyond presenting, you’ll play an active role in the production of all weather reports and stories: you’ll work alongside production colleagues to find new ways to communicate the weather, exploring new angles and new approaches.
About you
Forecasting experience and knowledge will, of course, be an advantage. But whatever your background, you’ll have a genuine interest in the weather and a real on-screen presence and a strong broadcasting voice, and the ability to present with charisma, confidence and credibility. It’s also important that you’re quick to grasp and understand complex weather situations, and are then able to communicate and present the information in a clear and easy-to-understand way. While you’ll be the face and voice of the weather, you appreciate that you’re part of a large production team: a team player, you’re always ready to support and encourage your colleagues.
The rewards
We offer a world-class reward package. Along with a competitive salary, you can look forward to a Civil Service pension, 25 days’ holiday, enhanced maternity and adoption leave, plus excellent learning and development opportunities.
