With ambitious plans for next year we’re looking for a talented and experienced Head of Production – Commissioning. We’re creating 500 hours of content across multi genre and this is a truly unique opportunity to take ultimate responsibility for the production, delivery and budgeting of all originated content at UKTV.  

Department Summary:

UKTV’s commissioning department is responsible for the development, commissioning and execution of commissioned, co-productions and advertising funded programmes/product placement projects across the UKTV channels.  We operate a fully 360 model of commissioning with particular focus on the commercial opportunities offered by our investment into original content.  The department works in broad genre terms across factual, lifestyle and entertainment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ultimate responsibility for the production, delivery and budgeting of all originated content at UKTV, negotiating and signing off on production schedules, budgets, contingencies
  • Negotiates and agrees principle talent fees with agents
  • Manages all delivery functions for all originations into UKTV including streamlining delivery processes and effective supporting paperwork
  • Ensures productions are delivered in line with UKTV’s technical specs and resources are in place to enable this delivery
  • Manages and promotes positive Indie relationships to drive collaborative approach on budgets and scheduling, ensuring the delivery of high quality programming
  • Reduces costs of commissioned content whilst protecting its quality
  • Manages release of budget contingency
  • Oversees budget and sign off on all development spend
  • Leads, manages, motivates and develops the production management team and creates the environment for them to do their best work
  • Works with Legal & Business Affairs and the Programme Funding team to create good financial and deal structures, negotiating with external suppliers as required
  • Oversees all post production paperwork and reporting
  • Oversees diversity monitoring of content partners for on and off screen talent and works with them to pro-actively improve on diversity
  • Keeps across new trends in the production process, working with supplies to ensure they are using the most cost efficient methods of production
  • Promotes green productions through the Albert Consortium
  • Represents both UKTV and the Commissioning team to production companies and the industry as a whole

Knowledge, skills & experience

  • A proven track record at Head of Production or Director of Production level
  • Excellent negotiator, presenter, influencer and relationship manager who demonstrates strong influencing skills within UKTV and with production companies and industry bodies
  • A naturally collaborative style with the ability to build and manage positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Extensive knowledge of TV and digital production, proramme budgets and international distribution
  • Has an analytical approach with the ability to identify key issues, anticipate problems and deliver solutions
  • Demonstrable in-depth knowledge of complex commissioning negotiations, including co-production and advertiser funded output.  Will have either negotiated programme budgets direct with Broadcasters, or have worked for a Broadcaster negotiating budgets with production companies
  • Experience of working across a broad range of genres to include scripted and un-scripted
  • Good working knowledge of standard legal and business affairs practice in the TV industry
  • Knowledge of legal factors, contractual agreements and corporate agreements as they affect production
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the regulations surrounding advertiser funded and product placement programmes; for these commissions, to ensure that programmes match commercial value with regulatory guidelines
  • Demonstrable experience of line management and leadership
  • A committed and co-operative team player who is able to support other members of the team
  • Ability to harness team spirit across UKTV and collaborate with colleagues across the business to deliver successful projects
  • Able to retain focus on long term objectives and also retain a detailed grasp of day-to-day issues
  • An understanding of the need to leverage maximum value from rights ownership
  • Ability to successfully manage a high volume of complex projects concurrently
  • Demonstrable concern and desire to achieve results and goals
  • An understanding of the regulatory framework in which content creation operates
  • An understanding of agreements with talent unions and industry bodies and the ability to represent UKTV in discussions with them
  • Knowledge of PACT arrangements
  • Communicates clearly and concisely, presenting complex information effectively both orally and in writing to all levels both internally and externally
  • Strong IT skills
  • A genuine passion for TV
