Job Description

A little bit about our team...

UKTV is a commercial broadcaster reaching nearly 40m viewers every month, and the work the commissioning team do within the company is seen as being increasingly important to its continued success.

We commission across factual, factual entertainment, comedy entertainment, drama and scripted comedy, and are a vibrant and dynamic, close knit and highly motivated team.

The scripted comedy unit within commissioning is compact, being centred on the commissioning exec, who works into the head of scripted and is supported by a (part time) dedicated script reader.

The team is responsible for finding, nurturing, developing, commissioning and then executive producing comedy series and one-off ‘TV Films’ across a range of tones, durations and platforms – with content currently sitting mainly on two of our flagship channels, Dave and Gold.

We commission approximately four series a year onto each of those platforms, but we are ambitious and are looking to expand on this total over time.

Scripted comedy is notoriously difficult to get right but there is a real commitment to the genre at UKTV – certainly more than at any other digital broadcaster in the UK and indeed more than at most of the bigger terrestrial players.

In 2019 we enjoyed an exceptionally strong year on Gold which gives us both a valuable bedrock of returning series to nurture and develop, and a great springboard for further shows in 2020 and beyond, whilst on Dave there is an outstanding challenge and opportunity to find the next big hit to replace Taskmaster - and there is no reason why this can’t be a scripted show.

 Purpose of the role

Scripted comedy currently consists of one Commissioner (the Head of Scripted, who divides his time with running the drama department) and one part time Script Reader, working 2 days a week - the department requires additional resources as there is a huge amount of exciting work to do. The department and UKTV as a whole will benefit hugely from this invaluable appointment as this is a critical genre in terms of our plans for growth within the industry. It’s an incredible opportunity for the right person to make a significant difference - at what is arguably the most exciting and ambitious linear broadcaster operating in the UK today.
